Our Story

Our Mission: Answering the call to be good stewards of Earth and all Creation by building a movement of environmental stewardship and conservation action.

Who we are: Mormon Environmental Stewardship Alliance (MESA) is an independent nonprofit organization, and not an official website or organization affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are a community of Latter-day Saints, friends and supporters, who find faith-affirming work in caring and advocating for God’s Creation, and contributing as wise stewards of the earth to further His eternal purposes and instruction to care for all living things.

What we do: Often, doing the right thing requires political and civic activism, both encouraging political leaders to take appropriate actions, and holding our elected officers “accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society” (Doctrine & Covenants 134:1). Many latter-day prophets, apostles and other leaders have equated the environmental degradation of the earth as a symptom of the greed and lusts of society. Wanton consumerism has diminished our spiritual wealth. Misappropriation of the abundance of the earth’s resources to the wealthy harms the poor and disenfranchised of the earth, whom Christ commanded us to serve. When we pollute our air, our land and our water, we make the earth ugly, and offend Him (see https://www.lds.org/topics/environmental-stewardship-and-conservation).

We educate and advocate for public policy and political action consistent with this statement by the prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: “As beneficiaries of the divine Creation, what shall we do? We should care for the earth, be wise stewards over it, and preserve it for future generations. And we are to love and care for one another.” (See https://www.lds.org/ensign/2000/05/the-creation).
